Five students booked for stone-pelting and attacking security staff
VARANASI, April 21 -- A violent clash erupted at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) after students allegedly attacked security personnel with water bottles and stones.
Following the incident, police registered a criminal case against five named students and 40 unidentified individuals.
The trouble reportedly began when a group of students tried to move an iron bench into the middle of a road to celebrate a birthday.
When security staff moved in to stop them, the students became violent.
One security guard, identified as Paramhans Yadav, sustained injuries in the attack and is receiving treatment at a local trauma centre.
Earlier that evening, students at the Birla 'A' hostel had complained about a lack of filtered drinking water.
The chief proctor, professor Sandeep Pokharia, stated that officials visited the hostel immediately and provided 75 bottles of water, promising a permanent fix by Sunday morning.
However, a member of the proctorial board said that despite this help, a large group of students insisted on holding the birthday celebration on the road.
When the warden and security teams asked them to move, the students grew angry.
They first threw water bottles before retreating into the hostel to pelt the guards with stones.
Police eventually arrived at the scene to help university authorities bring the situation under control
