Fake cops arrested for cheating family
PRAYAGRAJ, Jan. 22 -- Kaushambi police have arrested three inter-state fraudsters who cheated people by posing as police officers. The accused allegedly took Rs.50,000 from a family by falsely promising to rescue their abducted minor girl.
According to police, the incident took place in the Saini area of Kaushambi. A minor girl from the family was reportedly lured away and abducted by a neighbour. During the investigation, one of the accused contacted a relative of the girl while impersonating a police inspector named "Inspector Rajiv". The caller claimed he could help in rescuing the girl and asked the family to transfer money. Trusting him, the victim sent Rs.50,000 through PhonePe on October 26, 2025.
After receiving the money, the accused switched off his phone. An FIR was later registered on December 24, 2025, against unknown persons. Superintendent of police (SP) Kaushambi, Rajesh Kumar, said the accused used government portals to collect information. They downloaded details of the abduction case from the UP COP portal and obtained the village head's mobile number from the Panchayati Raj Department portal to contact the victim's family. During interrogation, the accused admitted that they had carried out similar frauds in Uttar Pradesh and other states using online portals. The arrested persons have been identified as Pradeep Kumar, Ajay Kumar and Deependra Yadav, all residents of Jhansi district. Police recovered five Android phones, one iPhone, three ATM cards, 11 Aadhaar cards and eight SIM cards from their possession....
