Facility on anvil to care for animals affected by human-wildlife conflict
Haldwani, Feb. 15 -- The Uttarakhand forest department has decided to set up a temporary rescue facility for animals affected by human-wildlife conflict in Nainital district, officials said on Saturday.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Terai East forest division, Himanshu Bagri said, "A proposal has been sent to the government for constructing a 'Temporary Rescue Facility for Conflict Animals' centre on about 250 square metres of land near the grasslands in the Dolly range under the division in Nainital district. Work will begin after approval."
According to forest officials, the division, which covers forest areas across Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts up to the Nepal and Uttar Pradesh borders, frequently witnesses human-animal conflict.
At present, rescued animals are sent to the Dhaila rescue centre at Corbett National Park and the Ranibagh rescue centre, added officials. "But the proposed facility will have a single enclosure within the forest, allowing animals to remain in a natural environment while under observation. After medical evaluation and recovery, suitable animals will be released back into the wild," he said.
The DFO further said, " The facility is expected to ensure quicker medical care for injured animals, reduce stress caused by long-distance transfers, and improve safety for local residents. It will also strengthen the forest department's capacity to manage rescues and curb human-wildlife conflict in Terai region."...
