Exam holding agency to be quizzed on loopholes
Dehradun, Feb. 16 -- Investigators from the special task force (STF) of the Uttarakhand police are probing the modus operandi of a "sophisticated" high-tech cheating racket busted during the SSC online examination in Dehradun, police said, adding they have summoned representatives of the exam-conducting agency, Eduquity Career Technologies, to ascertain whether any loopholes in their system were exploited by the accused.
Inspector general of police (STF) Nilesh Anand Bharne said remote access software was used to solve question papers on candidates' computer screens during the online examination. The cheating was allegedly facilitated at the Mahadev Digital Zone examination centre located at MKP Inter College in Dehradun during the Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff and Havildar recruitment examination conducted on Friday.
Acting on specific inputs, the STF raided the centre and found that questions were being solved remotely by accessing candidates' systems through specialised software.
During the raid, the STF discovered an underground chamber measuring approximately 24x24 inches concealed inside the UPS room near the examination lab.
Two laptops connected to a router were found operating in automatic mode and were allegedly being accessed remotely to solve question papers during the exam.
Sub-inspector Rajesh Dhyani, an officer involved in the probe, said, "It is a sophisticated and one-of-its-kind cheating method. We are examining the modus operandi in detail. We will also call representatives of the exam-conducting agency to determine whether there was any vulnerability in their system."
"Some names have surfaced during the investigation so far. We are working on the leads," he added.
During the raid, the STF seized and sealed the electronic equipment using technical and forensic tools.
The examination centre was subsequently sealed.
Among the items recovered were two Dell laptops, a Zebronics Ethernet connector adapter (USB to Ethernet cable), two Cat-6 Ethernet cables with USB connectors, a Digisol router with charger, a PNT cable connecting box and four mobile phones.
"Two people were arrested from the spot, identified as Nitish Kumar, a resident of Deoria in Uttar Pradesh currently residing in Nangloi, Delhi, and Bhaskar Naithani, a resident of Nathuwala in Dehradun," Bharne said.
According to officials, the two allegedly enabled unidentified handlers to access candidates' computer systems using remote access software through laptops hidden in a concealed room.
He added, "The accused demanded Rs.10 lakh from each candidate by luring them with assurances of helping them clear the examination. "
A case has been registered at Kotwali police station under provisions of the Uttarakhand Competitive Examination (Measures to Prevent and Combat Unfair Means in Recruitment) Act, 2023, relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Section 66 of the IT Act, police said....
