ED arrests Sujit Bose in recruitment scam
Kolkata, May 12 -- The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested former West Bengal fire and emergency services minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sujit Bose on Monday night after interrogating him for almost 11 hours regarding alleged corruption in recruitment by several civic bodies, an official of the federal agency said, on conditions of anonymity. The arrest came hours after the state's first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief minister Suvendu Adhikari held his first cabinet and administrative meetings. Officials claimed the politician was "evasive" in his replies, often "inconsistent", and was hence arrested. In 2023, the Calcutta High Court ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe allegations that various civic bodies recruited 1,500 people between 2014 and 2018 in exchange for money. ED started a parallel probe and searched Bose's home and two restaurants that he runs. His daughter and son were also questioned. Bose went to ED office at Salt Lake in response to a third summons. His son, Samudra, accompanied him. Bose, who lost his Bidhannagar seat to BJP in the two-phase polls, and former food minister Rathin Ghosh, who won from Madhyamgram, were summoned in April as well. Unlike Bose, Ghosh did not respond to five notices. The TMC did not make any statement on Bose's arrest till the edition went to print....
