LUCKNOW, Feb. 11 -- Uttar Pradesh will run a massive campaign in 21 filariasis-affected districts, said deputy CM Brajesh Pathak after a review meeting on Tuesday. Union health minister JP Nadda launched a 'Mass Drug Administration campaign' in 12 states across the country for elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) via video conferencing on Tuesday. The target has been set to administer filariasis prevention medicine to 1.4 crore people in the state. The campaign was launched in conjunction with National Deworming Day in 124 districts across 12 states. In UP, the campaign will run in Shahjahanpur, Ballia, Barabanki, Chitrakoot, Unnao, Pratapgarh, Ayodhya, Bhadohi, Hardoi, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Sonbhadra, Ambedkarnagar, Auraiya, Bahraich, Banda, Fatehpur, Kheri, Lucknow, Pilibhit and Rae Bareli. ASHAs and health workers will administer anti-filariasis medication door-to-door. WHO-recommended medicines - Ivermectin, Diethylcarbamazine (DEC), and Albendazole - will be given to eligible individuals above one year. "Filariasis is a mosquito-borne disease that can lead to incurable diseases like elephantiasis and hydrocele if left untreated," said Dr Pawan Kumar Arun, director general of medical and health services.
