LUCKNOW, April 1 -- Beginning today, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched a 15-day statewide enforcement drive to inspect every school bus, van and hired vehicle, with officials directed to seize those found unfit or operating with expired fitness certificates. The move comes after recent accidents involving school vehicles in the state, including a fatal incident in Agra where a student died after being hit by an unfit bus, and another case in Fatehpur involving a vehicle operating without permit. The drive, which will run till April 15, is aimed at tightening safety norms for school transport across the state. Authorities have been instructed to carry out 100% checking of vehicles attached to schools, leaving no scope for exemptions. The directive has been issued by additional chief secretary (basic and secondary education) Parth Sarathi Sen Sharma, who has written to all district inspectors of schools (DIOs) and basic shiksha adhikaris (BSA), asking them to ensure complete compliance. To ensure compliance, monitoring will be done through committees at both district and school levels. At the district level, the committee will function under the DM, while at the school level, it will be headed by the principal with members from parents, police and the education department. These committees will hold mandatory quarterly meetings in April, July, October and January to review vehicle records and verify adherence to safety norms. As part of the exercise, all schools have been asked to upload complete details of their vehicles on the transport department's portal, upisvmp.com, by April 15. This is aimed at creating a centralised database and enabling real time monitoring of school transport.
