Diamonds worth Rs 2 cr stolen from showroom near DIG office
MEERUT, Jan. 24 -- A brazen heist took place late Thursday night at a diamond showroom in Saharanpur's Sadar Bazar, with thieves making off with diamond jewellery valued at approximately Rs 2 crore and Rs 2 lakh in cash. The incident has raised serious security concerns, as the showroom is situated less than 100 metres from the DIG office, an area that has been considered highly secure.
The theft came to light on Friday morning when showroom staff arrived to open the outlet and discovered a three-foot hole in the wall. Police were immediately informed, and senior officers subsequently rushed to the spot and began an intensive investigation.
According to police officials, the showroom was equipped with around 20 CCTV cameras, but the burglars had systematically switched off all cameras before entering, indicating meticulous planning. Investigators believe the thieves had been conducting reconnaissance of the area for several days and deliberately breached the wall at the point where the camera connections converged.
Preliminary investigation revealed that at the time of the theft, the showroom housed jewellery worth approximately Rs 5 crore. The burglars targeted four high-value diamond necklaces, collectively worth nearly Rs 2 crore. Interestingly, although six diamond necklaces were kept in three separate cabinets, the thieves removed jewellery from only two cabinets, leaving the third untouched. Police suspect the criminals intended to steal more but fled in haste, possibly after sensing movement nearby.
The showroom, CaratLane, is located on Delhi Road in Sadar Bazar. The building has external stairs leading to the terrace, with the stairway wall adjoining the showroom.
DIG Abhishek Singh said the burglars scaled the wall to reach the roof, broke the staircase door, entered the showroom by cutting through the wall, and escaped using the same route....
