Varanasi, Jan. 15 -- A criminal who disguised himself as a woman to loot truck drivers and passers-by was arrested after a police encounter near the Kanhar river bridge under the Kon police station area on Wednesday. SHO Sanjeev Singh said that during night patrol on January 14, police received information about criminals planning a robbery in the area. A police team raided the spot at around 5 am. On seeing the police, the criminals opened fire and the police retaliated in self-defence. One accused, Krishna alias Krishnadev Singh ,23, was injured in the leg and arrested. An illegal .315 bore pistol, cartridges, cash and mobile phones were recovered from him. A case has been registered. During interrogation, the accused confessed that he and his gang disguised themselves as women to stop vehicles on highways and main roads, lure drivers to forests or secluded places, and rob them at gunpoint. He identified his fleeing accomplice as Sonu, son of Surendra alias Sulendra. Police said the accused has a criminal history with several cases registered against him. Police teams have been formed to arrest the accomplice soon.
