Lucknow, Feb. 13 -- Amid rising injuries linked to Chinese manjha and the recent death of 33-year-old Md Shoaib in Bazarkhala, West Zone police on Thursday held an awareness meeting with traders, urging strict compliance with the ban on the synthetic kite string. At Chowk police station, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vishwajeet Srivastava met kite-string wholesalers, retailers, traders' representatives and residents, reiterating that Chinese manjha is completely prohibited under a government order dated February 9, 2026. Police have also been using drones to monitor its use in the city. "Shauk ke badle shok nahin (Do not turn a hobby into someone else's grief)," the DCP said, noting that the glass-coated string has caused serious injuries to two-wheeler riders, children and birds. He stressed that safety must take precedence. Traders and residents took a pledge not to sell or use banned manjha and to promote plain cotton thread instead. Some parents handed over prohibited strings and charkhis to police. Officials warned that anyone found selling, stocking or using Chinese manjha would face strict legal action.
