Congress stages dharnas in Varanasi against MNREGA replacement
VARANASI, Jan. 12 -- Congress workers, led by Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) president Ajai Rai, staged a dharna (sit-in protest) against the replacement of MNREGA with the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission Grameen (VB GRAM G), in Lucknow on Sunday.
Rai alleged that the government is attempting to take away the right to work and the right to minimum wages by introducing the new VB GRAM law in place of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA).
Rai alleged that the government has abolished the MGNREGA law and is trying to take away the rights of the poor, asserting that Congress will not allow this. Police were deployed at the site.
Rai said a historic rally will be held in Lucknow, with national leaders participating, to protect the rights of the poor. He added that programs like MGNREGA serve both economic and social purposes.
Meanwhile, a video of Rajiv Nayan, former unit president of the NSUI (National Students' Union of India), is going viral on social media. In the video, he says that the "Save MNREGA March" scheduled for 11 AM on Sunday was disrupted as he was detained from his hostel and taken to the police station even before it began.
On Sunday morning, Police Commissioner Mohit Agarwal led a foot march on the BHU (Banaras Hindu University) campus, appealing for peace and order in the city. Meanwhile, police contingents were deployed outside the PMO, where a massive security check was conducted ahead of the Congress protest, with the area also under drone surveillance....
