CIMAP develops formula to extend life of cut flowers
Lucknow, Jan. 28 -- Scientists at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CSIR-CIMAP) have developed a new formulation that increases the vase life of cut flowers.
The formulation, named CIM-FloraSoul, has two components, A and B.
These are mixed with water before placing flowers in a vase. Scientist Akansha Singh, who worked on the formulation, said that 10 ml of component A and 1 gram of component B should be added to one litre of water.
She explained that the formulation contains antimicrobial agents and ethylene pathway blockers.
These reduce stress hormones that cause early decay and drying of flowers.
The formulation has been tested on rose, rajnigandha, gladiolus and gerbera.
According to the results, flowers remain fresh for nine to ten days, compared to four to five days without the formulation. Singh said the formulation is colourless and odourless, making it safe to use.
It is also cost-effective, costing about Rs.3 per litre of water.
More than 50 cut flowers can be placed in one litre of the solution.
Akansha Singh added that it would benefit hoteliers, florists, event managers and flower lovers.
Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants ((CSIR-CIMAP) director Prabodh Kumar Trivedi said the formulation will be released during the Kisan Mela, to be held on Friday and Saturday....
