LUCKNOW, March 25 -- : A special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation in Lucknow on Tuesday convicted two railway officials and sentenced them to three years' imprisonment in a corruption case involving fraudulent inspections and supply of substandard materials to the Indian Railways, officials said in a press note. It caused a loss of approximately Rs.65 lakh to the Railways.
The CBI Court (West), Lucknow, sentenced Bharat Chaudhary, then Senior Material Manager at Diesel Depot in Gonda, and Rajesh Kumar Sharma, then Assistant Chief Materials Manager (Laboratory) with North Eastern Railway, Gorakhpur. The court also imposed a total fine of Rs.90,000 on the two convicts.
According to the CBI, the case was registered on August 7, 2014, based on source information. The investigation revealed that during the period from 2008 to 2013, the accused public servants entered into a criminal conspiracy with others, including a private contractor, to defraud the Railways.

The fraudulent activities allegedly caused a loss of approximately Rs.65 lakh to the Railways.
After completing the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet on August 30, 2018, against the accused, including a manager of RITES Limited and the proprietor of the supplier firm.
During the trial, proceedings against two of the accused-Kapil Deo Sharma, then manager with RITES, Kanpur, and Rabindra Kumar Bhalotia, proprietor of the firm-were abated following their deaths, the CBI said.
