Broken match-making 'deal' led to murder; neighbour held
LUCKNOW, Jan. 20 -- The motive behind the murder of 30-year-old Poonam whose skeletal remains were found in a mustard field in Nagram on January 7 was finally revealed with the police arresting her neighbour, Ashish Kumar, 20, on Monday.
Police said the killing was allegedly triggered by an inability to fix the marriage of the accused, on the part of the woman, turning a "friendly neighbour" into a killer.
"Ashish was in regular contact with Poonam and had been assured by her that she would help arrange his marriage with her elder sister's daughter. She had even facilitated conversations between the families. However, when the girl's family fixed her marriage elsewhere, Ashish reportedly felt cheated and developed resentment towards Poonam," said Vasanth Rallapalli, ADCP, South, in a press conference on Monday.
A joint investigation by Nagram police and the surveillance cell, based on technical evidence, local inputs and informer information, led to Ashish's arrest on January 19. Police said he has no prior criminal record. He has been sent to judicial custody after completion of legal procedures.
Police revealed that on December 12, Ashish allegedly lured Poonam to a garden in village Kubhara under Nagram police station limits around 9:30 am.
An argument erupted, and in a fit of rage, Ashish strangled her to death. To avoid suspicion, he later went to work in Mohanlalganj, returning to the village only in the evening.
"When Poonam's family began searching for her, Ashish panicked. Around 10 pm the same night, he allegedly carried the body to a mustard field west of the village and dumped it there. He also removed her anklet and locket, which were later recovered from his possession after he disclosed their location. The jewellery was identified by the victim's relatives," the ADCP added.
Poonam had gone missing on December 12 between 9 am and 2 pm, and a missing person's report was registered at Nagram police station. The case took a grim turn when her skeletal remains were found on January 7 in a mustard field in Kubhara. The body was in a highly decomposed state, making identification difficult.
A sari found near the site raised suspicion and led the family to believe the remains could be of Poonam.
The police team called a forensic unit for scientific evidence collection and conducted photography, videography and a full panchayatnama. The skeletal remains were sent for a post-mortem examination after proper sealing....
