NAGPUR, Feb. 11 -- The Congress on Tuesday lost the Chandrapur Municipal Corporation's mayoral polls with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staging a dramatic comeback to regain control of the civic body with the help of Shiv Sena (UBT), BJP's Sangeeta Khandekar defeated the Congress nominee Vaishali Mahadule by a razor-thin margin of one vote. The lone vote by a corporator of the Shiv Sena (UBT), an ally of the Congress in the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi, turned tables in favour of the BJP candidate. Shiv Sena (UBT) corporator Prashant Danav was elected the deputy mayor. Rattled by the development, state Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal alleged horse-trading and blamed the Uddhav Thackeray-led party, AIMIM, and the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi for the result. "In the Chandrapur mayoral election, the BJP secured 32 votes and Congress 31. The Sena (UBT) is an ally in the MVA and the India bloc. With its six corporators, the Sena (UBT) was expected to support the Congress. But the party chose to go with the BJP," Sapkal told reporters in Mumbai. According to people aware of the development, the BJP struck a deal with the Sena (UBT), agreeing to share the mayor and deputy mayor posts for 15 months each over the next two-and-a-half years, with the BJP holding the office first. This understanding decisively shifted the balance of power.
