Autopsies at PGI, RMLIMS to ease KGMU burden
LUCKNOW, April 8 -- In a move aimed at streamlining medico-legal procedures and easing pressure, the Lucknow district administration decided on Tuesday to decentralise the post- mortem system by dividing the state capital into three zones based on police station jurisdictions.
Each zone will be assigned a dedicated institution to conduct post-mortem examinations.
Under the new plan, autopsies will now also be conducted at the Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) and the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences in addition to the King George's Medical University (KGMU) where all post-mortems are currently conducted.
This step will ease the burden of the medical university where on an average 25 post-mortems are carried out daily, said officials aware of the move.
Authorities have set a target to operationalise the facility at the Lohia Institute by the end of April, while implementation at the SGPGI is expected to take some more time.
Health department officials said all three centres will function under the supervision of trained forensic experts, ensuring uniformity and adherence to medico-legal standards.
"The decentralised system will not only expedite the process but also improve accuracy in sensitive cases," an official said.
Confirming the move, Lucknow district magistrate Vishak G said it will ease the burden on the KGMU mortuary. He also said the health department issued a government order regarding the new system a couple of months ago.
