Dehradun, Feb. 13 -- The two accused in the murder case of a retired Colonel's son were arrested after separate police encounters in different parts of Dehradun, an officer said on Thursday. The police have also detained three people including the mother of the deceased for questioning, he said. SSP Ajai Singh said in the wake of the murder outside Tibetan Market, a district-wide special search operation had been launched to apprehend the shooter and his associate. Acting on inputs during early morning checking, police arrested the two accused in separate encounters. The SSP said preliminary investigation has revealed that property dispute within the family and financial dealings as the main reason behind the murder. "We have detained three people including the mother of the deceased for questioning. Those detained included Bina Sharma (mother), Vinod Uniyal and Ajay Khanna. They are being questioned at present," he said. He said a case has been registered against three people - Bina Sharma, Ajay Khanna, and Vinod Uniyal - on the complaint of Abhilasha Sharma, wife of the deceased. He said the two alleged shooters who were arrested in the morning in two separate encounters include Rajeev alias Raju (50), and Pankaj (52), both residents of Dehradun. On Wednesday, a 40-year-old man, the son of a retired Colonel, was shot dead outside Tibetan Market by two scooter-borne assailants, triggering widespread outrage and a major police crackdown across Dehradun. The deceased, identified as Arjun Sharma, a resident of Indira Nagar, was the owner of Amardeep Gas Agency on GMS Road. Sharma was approaching his car parked near the market after playing tennis at the Parade Ground when assailants shot him. Talking about the encounters, the SSP said in the first incident, during a blockade and checking operation in the Ladpur forest area under Raipur police station limits, a suspect opened fire on the police team. "Police retaliated, injuring the accused in the leg. He was overpowered, arrested and immediately rushed to Coronation Hospital for treatment", he said. In the second incident, at the Laltappar police post area, a scooter-borne suspect failed to stop at a police checkpoint and fled the spot. He entered an abandoned factory and opened fire on the pursuing police team. In retaliatory firing, this accused was also shot in the leg and arrested on the spot, he said. He was also admitted to the same hospital, he added. Police said both accused are undergoing treatment at the hospital under police custody. Two country-made pistols and a scooter were recovered from their possession. The SSP said the accused confessed to their involvement in the murder. Further investigation is underway, he added....
