GORAKHPUR, Feb. 13 -- Former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur was released from Deoria District Jail late on Wednesday evening after being granted bail in a fraud case related to the allotment of an industrial plot in 1999. Thakur had been lodged in jail for nearly two months following his arrest on December 10, 2025, in connection with this case. District judge Dhirendra Pratap Singh of Deoria granted him bail on January 19. However, after completing the required technical and legal formalities, Thakur was released 61 days after his arrest. Jailor Rajkumar confirmed that the release took place after the court's bail order was received and all necessary legal procedures, including verification of bail bonds, were completed. Officials stated that the case against the former IPS officer pertains to allegations of fraud, and further legal proceedings will continue in accordance with the law. "Bail has been granted by the court. The investigation is ongoing, and necessary legal action will be taken based on the evidence," an official said. Thakur reportedly left the jail premises quietly and did not make any public statement. Meanwhile, a Lucknow Police team with a prisoner van had been camping in Deoria amid apprehensions among his supporters that he might be re-arrested.
