Lucknow, May 12 -- Samajwadi Party (SP) national president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday questioned the timing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent appeal for public austerity measures, including the judicious use of fuel and postponing non-essential gold purchases amid rising global tensions. The former UP chief minister described the appeal as an "admission of failure" that could spread panic in markets. In a strongly worded post on X, he claimed that the government had only "suddenly remembered" the economic crisis after assembly elections in four states and the Union Territory of Puducherry concluded, asserting that the "only crisis" confronting the country is the BJP itself. Referring to the prime minister's call on gold, he remarked, "Ordinary people are anyway unable to buy even a small quantity of gold priced at Rs.1.5 lakh per 10 grams." He warned that such appeals would only fuel fear, restlessness, and despair across trade, commerce, and markets, potentially triggering recession or spiraling inflation....
