Ludhiana, March 27 -- The Punjab government has withdrawn its notification announcing a charge of Rs.80 for downloading copies of First Information Reports (FIRs) from the government's online portal, Sanjh, a move that had drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties and legal activists. A petition was also filed in the Punjab and Haryana high court challenging the move. HT had on Tuesday reported that the government had madeFIR downloads chargeable starting March 23. However, after widespread opposition, additional chief secretary of the department of good governance and information technology, DK Tiwari, issued a fresh notification. "The earlier notification imposing an Rs.80 service charge has been withdrawn with immediate effect,"it said.
