Lucknow, Feb. 21 -- With Holi preparations and Ramzan driving up demand for sweets and snacks, the Food Safety and Drug Administration has launched an intensive enforcement drive across the city to check adulterated and substandard food items commonly consumed during the festive season. Acting on the commissioner's directives, three teams began inspections on Friday, focusing on high-demand products such as khoya, paneer, milk-based sweets, edible oils, ghee, vanaspati, besan, maida, coloured kachri, papad, chips, namkeen and packaged drinking water. During raids at multiple establishments and cold storages, six food samples were collected for laboratory testing. Legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, will follow after reports are received, officials said. Around 1,320 kg of dates were found expired and unsafe and were destroyed on the spot. Another 1,418 kg of coloured kachri was seized for testing for possible adulterants. The teams also seized 2,000 kg of turmeric and 20,475 kg of supari during the drive. In all, 23,893 kg of food products worth about Rs.41.02 lakh were seized from various outlets.
