6 held as probe into 4-month abuse of minor girl widens
GORAKHPUR, April 10 -- Police have arrested six individuals in connection with the gang rape of a Class 9 girl student who was allegedly sexually exploited by 10 youths over four months in Gorakhpur. The arrested include a hotel manager while efforts continue to apprehend four others, officials said on Thursday.
The minor was recovered on March 23 from a locality under Gulhariya police station limits after her parents filed a complaint on November 7.
In her statement before a magistrate, on Wednesday, the survivor revealed that she was not interested in continuing her education. She initially left with a youth known to her and returned home after a week. Later, she was placed in a hotel for 37 days where multiple youths allegedly assaulted her.
During this time, she came in contact with another youth, who exploited her and later abandoned her near Ramgarh Lake. Following this, an auto-rickshaw driver kept her for over a month in an under-construction flat.
Ratnesh Kumar Singh, circle officer of Chauri Chaura, confirmed that a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act based on the survivor's statement, CCTV footage and medical examination reports.
