MEERUT, Feb. 22 -- A 40-year-old man was shot dead by armed robbers during a late-night robbery in the Pragati Nagar locality under Subhashnagar Police Station limits of Bareilly district, police said on Saturday, adding that the assailants fled with a bag containing cash. According to SHO Jitendra Singh, the incident occurred around 1 am when Jogendra Lodhi was sleeping in the veranda of his house, while his wife Anita was resting nearby. She told police that they were awakened by suspicious noises from the roof and they went upstairs to check the source of the sound. As they moved closer, two miscreants allegedly confronted them. One of them suddenly opened fire at Jogendra, and the bullet struck him in his chest, killing him on the spot. In panic, Anita slipped and fell on the staircase. Meanwhile, one of the assailants grabbed a bag from inside the house before fleeing with his accomplice. On hearing Anita's screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and alerted the police. Officers arrived soon after, sent the body for post-mortem examination, and launched an investigation. Officials said a case has been registered based on Anita's complaint and further legal proceedings are underway. Police said Jogendra had recently constructed the house in Pragati Nagar Colony in the Kargaina area and had been residing there. He was a vegetable vendor. Anita's brother, Dharmendra, whose house is under construction nearby, is a head constable with UP-112 posted in Pilibhit.
