Kanpur, Feb. 21 -- The administration of Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology has taken action against 31 students after a violent clash between hostel groups on Saturday night. Seven students have been expelled from their hostels for one year and fined Rs.10,000 each. They must vacate their rooms within 24 hours. Four students have been fined Rs.5,000 each and 20 others Rs.2,500 each. All fines must be paid within 15 days. The clash involved PhD and Agri-business management students from the Varuna, Shekhar and Dr APJ Abdul Kalam hostels. It reportedly began over the glare of a motorcycle headlight and escalated into a fight with sticks. Dean of student welfare Dr Mukesh Srivastava reached the spot with police. Wardens' phones were switched off during the incident, drawing criticism. Vice-chancellor K Vijayendra Pandian said an inquiry found 31 students guilty.
