300 cases of liquor bound for Bihar seized in Haridwar
Haridwar, Jan. 16 -- A heavy commercial truck ferrying 300 caskets of illicit liquor bound for Bihar, a dry state, was seized on Thursday in Haridwar, in a crackdown on the illegal liquor trade, police said, adding the accused driver has been arrested, and a case has been registered. Haridwar SSP, Pramendra Dobhal, said the truck, loaded with Haryana-made whisky, had started from Chandigarh and was headed towards Bihar via Haridwar, Gorakhpur, and Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh. According to police, heavy commercial vehicles were restricted from plying in the region for the past two days due to the Lohri-Makar Sankranti festival. As a result, the truck got stranded near the border and later attempted to change its route at the Landaura border area to reach the Gorakhpur route in Uttar Pradesh.
"The truck driver tried to evade police checks by claiming that the caskets contained chemical bottles meant for industrial use and even produced fake bills. However, during a thorough inspection, 300 caskets of illegal liquor were recovered," SSP Dobhal said. The accused, identified as Ravi Ranjan Rai, a resident of Sudarpur Biriyaur in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar, was arrested on the spot.
A case has been registered against him at Manglaur police station under Sections 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) and 318(4) (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police said the investigation is underway to uncover the entire network behind the illegal supply chain....
