Dehradun, Feb. 23 -- Dehradun police have arrested three more men in the murder case of a 28-year-old man, whose body was dumped in Haridwar forests over a debt of Rs.2.5 lakh, police said.
Police had earlier detained taxi driver Rajnandan, whose vehicle was used to transport the body.
The latest accused-Hemant Kumar Semwal (37), Adil (38), and Vaibhav Bhatt alias Sanju (25)-were arrested on Saturday near ISBT on Haridwar Bypass Road, police said.
Senior superintendent of police Pramendra Dobhal said Digambar Dhiman, a resident of Basant Vihar, was reported missing on February 11 by his father, Sant Ram Dhiman, at Basant Vihar police station.
According to the complaint, Dhiman had left home on February 9, telling his family he was attending a court hearing.
"During the investigation, police found that some of Digambar's acquaintances, with whom he frequently consumed drugs, had also gone missing around the same time. Our investigation revealed that on the night of February 9, Digambar and his associates travelled together in a taxi. We traced the taxi on February 17 and detained its driver, Rajnandan, a resident of New Patel Nagar, Dehradun. During interrogation, the driver disclosed that he had transported the body of a man wrapped in a blanket to the Chidiyapur forests at the behest of Digambar's associates. Acting on his disclosure, police recovered Digambar's body from the forest area and arrested the taxi driver," the SSP said.
Police then converted the missing person's report into a murder case and transferred the case to the Nehru Colony police station, as the crime was committed in the Race Course area. Separate teams were formed to trace the accused.
"Based on surveillance and intelligence, we arrested the three accused on Saturday. On their disclosure, police recovered a steel rod, an iron hammer used in the crime, and the victim's shoes from a dry riverbed near Nepali Farm," he said.
During interrogation, the accused told police that they had lent Rs.2.5 lakh to Digambar, which he failed to return. On February 9, after learning that he would be attending court, Hemant contacted him and called him to his rented accommodation in the Race Course area.
The four consumed the drugs together in the room. When Digambar refused to return the money, the accused assaulted him with an iron rod, hammer and screwdriver, intending to torture him.
He sustained severe injuries and died due to excessive bleeding....
