LUCKNOW, Jan. 8 -- Police have arrested a 27-year-old man in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a BA first-year student who later died after consuming a poisonous substance in the Para police station area of Lucknow, officials said on Wednesday. The case came to light on January 1 when the victim's father informed police that his daughter had consumed poison and died during treatment. A suicide note recovered during the inquiry allegedly accused her cousin of raping her, police said. Based on the complaint and contents of the note, police registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. A special police team was subsequently formed to trace the accused, who had been absconding since the incident. According to police, the student, a native of Hardoi district, was living with her family in Lucknow, where her father works as a vegetable vendor. The alleged assault took place in December when her parents and brothers were away in their native village, leaving her at home with her grandmother and cousin, who had been staying with the family for several years. Police said the victim consumed poison days after the alleged assault and was initially taken to a private hospital before being referred to Balrampur Hospital, where she died during treatment. Family members later found a suicide note, in which the student detailed the trauma she had endured and accused her cousin of threatening her and her family if she spoke out."The accused had switched off his mobile phone and was on the run. Acting on a tip-off, he was arrested from Hardoi district," SHO Para Suresh Singh said, adding that further legal proceedings are underway. Police said the investigation is continuing and the accused will be produced before a court as per procedure.htc...
