Haridwar, Feb. 3 -- At least 26 people were booked after violent clashes broke out between two groups of the same Scheduled Caste (SC) community during a feast organised as part of the 649th birth anniversary procession of Sant Ravidas in Binarsi village of Bhagwanpur block in Haridwar district on Sunday, police said on Monday. Two people died and several others were injured in the violence, they added. Tension following the incident also triggered large-scale vandalism. According to village representatives, agitated mobs damaged houses and vehicles and attempted arson. According to police, the violence began after a dispute broke out between two groups of young men during the community feast following the peaceful completion of the Sant Ravidas procession. The argument quickly escalated into a physical clash, during which gunfire was allegedly exchanged. Police said Anand Kant (28), a resident of Binarsi village belonging to one group, was allegedly shot dead during the violence. Later, Mange Ram (45), also a resident of the same village from the second group, was allegedly beaten to death during the confrontation. At least three other individuals sustained injuries from stray bullets and were rushed to hospital for treatment, a senior police officer familiar with the matter said. SSP Pramendra Dobhal said heavy police and PAC deployment has been ensured in the village to maintain law and order. "Investigation is underway, and all those involved in the incident will be identified and dealt with strictly in accordance with the law," the SSP said. Police teams are analysing mobile video clips, CCTV footage, and conducting digital surveillance to trace those involved in the violence. The SSP said separate cases have been registered against both sides at the Bhagwanpur police station.
