2 more chain snatchers held after encounter
LUCKNOW, Feb. 23 -- A day after a delivery man was arrested in an encounter in the PGI area in the state capital, East Zone police apprehended two more alleged chain snatchers following a late-night exchange of fire in Ghazipur police station limits on Saturday.
Officials said the accused conducted reconnaissance of various areas and targeted women walking alone. Further investigation is underway to ascertain their involvement in other cases.
Police said the accused were involved in a chain-snatching incident reported earlier this week. On February 21, an FIR was registered after one Vimla, a resident of Indira Nagar, complained that two unidentified men had snatched her gold chain near Gol Chauraha between 1.30 pm and 1.45 pm on February 19 and escaped on a scooter. "Taking up the case on priority, teams of Ghazipur police and the East Zone crime branch worked on electronic surveillance and local intelligence. Acting on a tip-off, they started a checking near Sarvodaya Nagar Bandha Road on Saturday night after receiving information that the suspects were heading towards Shakti Nagar Dhal on the scooter used in the crime," said DCP East Shashank Singh.
"When signalled to stop near Bandha Road mazaar, the duo allegedly attempted to flee but lost control and fell. Police said the pillion rider opened fire at the team, prompting retaliatory firing in which the main accused, Mohammad Ranu, 27, sustained a bullet injury in his leg. He was admitted to Balrampur Hospital. His accomplice, Rizwan, 26, was also arrested at the scene," the DCP added. Police recovered two country-made .315 bore pistols, two live cartridges, one spent cartridge, two stolen chains and the scooter....
