2 held for running high-tech cheating racket out of Dehradun exam centre
Dehradun, Feb. 15 -- The Uttarakhand Special Task Force (STF) on Friday arrested two people for running an alleged cheating racket and seized 11 pieces of technical equipment in a raid on a Dehradun examination centre during recruitment examinations for multi-tasking (non-technical) staff and havildar posts in the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) .
The accused were identified as Nitish Kumar from Uttar Pradesh's Deoria and currently based in Delhi, and Bhaskar Naithani from Dehradun, said senior superintendent of police (STF) Navneet Singh Bhullar.
Bhullar added that the raids followed a tip-off about the alleged activities of an organised gang that was luring candidates with promises of clearing the examination in exchange for large sums of money.
"Acting on the information, a joint team of Uttarakhand STF and Uttar Pradesh STF conducted a raid at Mahadev Digital Zone examination centre located at MKP Inter College in Dehradun. During the raid, the team discovered an underground chamber measuring approximately 24x24 inches concealed inside the UPS room near the examination lab. Two laptops connected to a router were found operating in automatic mode and being accessed remotely to solve question papers during the examination," the SSP said.
The STF seized and sealed the electronic equipment using technical and forensic tools. The examination centre was subsequently sealed.
Among the recovered items were two Dell laptops, one Zebronics Ethernet connector adapter (USB to Ethernet cable), two Cat-6 Ethernet cables with USB connectors, one Digisol router with charger, PNT cable connecting box and four mobile phones.
"The accused demanded Rs.10 lakh from each candidate by luring them with assurances of helping them pass the examination. During interrogation, it was revealed that the gang used sophisticated technology to remotely access computers and assist candidates in solving question papers," said Bhullar.
A case has been registered at Kotwali police station under sections of the Uttarakhand Competitive Examination (Measures to Prevent and Combat Unfair Means in Recruitment) Act, 2023, relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Section 66 of the IT Act.
"The investigation into the matter will be carried out by an officer of the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police," the SSP said, adding that a separate team has been constituted and the probe was underway....
