Lucknow, Feb. 24 -- liver transplant was performed at King George's Medical University (KGMU) after the organ of a brain-dead donor was transported from Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGI) Trauma Centre in 18 minutes through a specially created green corridor. The donor, 43-year-old Sandeep Kumar, was declared brain dead at PGI on Sunday. His family consented to donate his organs. As no suitable liver recipient was available at PGI at the time, officials contacted KGMU. Traffic authorities facilitated swift transport of the organ across the 19-km stretch. At KGMU, a 35-year-old patient with end-stage liver disease was identified as the recipient. The transplant team mobilised immediately and the surgery continued overnight into early Monday. Hospital sources said the patient has been extubated and is stable with normal vital parameters. He remains under close observation.
