15-year-old girl chased and murdered in Deoria
India, April 6 -- GORAKHPUR: A 15-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly chased into a wheat field and brutally murdered in Deoria district on Saturday evening, police said on Sunday. The body of the victim, Anjali, a resident of Nautan Hathiya Gadh village, was recovered from a field in her village under the Rampur Karkhana police station limits. Police have arrested the accused.
According to the police, on Saturday evening, the victim was intercepted by two bike-borne youths while she was on her way to a nearby market with her elder sister, Gudiya, and younger brother, Asheesh, to repair a mobile phone.
The assailants assaulted the trio, and one of the accused then reportedly pulled out a knife, prompting the siblings to flee. While her sister and brother managed to escape and inform their family, Anjali ran into a nearby wheat field where she was chased and caught by the main accused.
Police further said the accused attacked her with the sharp weapon, causing injuries to her face and neck. Local residents alleged that the attackers returned to the scene and slit her throat before fleeing.
Confirming the arrest of the accused, additional superintendent of police (South) Anand Kumar Pandey said that the main accused Aditya Singh alias Shivam Singh, 22, belongs to an OBC community, and his associate, Rakesh Kumar Gond, 21, belongs to Dalit community.
The police officials have also said the preliminary investigation suggests that the victim and the main accused had been in a relationship for the past four years. ASP Pandey added that the main accused came into contact with the victim during his visits to his maternal parents' house in the victim's village. ASP further added that both the accused have no criminal records.
The accused are now charged with murder and relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The victim's mother, Mansha Devi, filed a complaint stating her daughter was killed due to old enmity, contradicting the police claim of a relationship dispute. SHO Ashwani Pradhan stated that further investigation is underway, and they would investigate all aspects of the killing. Police have also initiated an investigation using CCTV footage.
