LUCKNOW, Feb. 18 -- The state capital has completed 1,00,000 street dog sterilisation surgeries under its Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme since its launch in 2019 by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) in partnership with an NGO, officials said on Tuesday. The 1,00,000th surgery was performed on 'Chitti', a community dog found injured by a local resident and volunteer. After treatment and sterilisation about 10 days ago, the dog was safely released back into its territory on Tuesday, they added. To mark the milestone, the ABC centre was decorated with educational wall paintings and murals. The artwork was created by professional artists from a Kerala-based community, working alongside volunteers and residents from Lucknow. According to officials, 300-400 street dogs are sterilised under the programme each week. The operation is supported by more than 30 trained staff members, six vehicles and a strong volunteer network. Officials said 20-30% of the dogs brought in for treatment come directly through community participation. Dr Abhinav Verma, LMC's chief animal welfare officer, said long-term success depends on both administrative backing and public trust. "Large-scale outcomes are only possible when the community supports them," he added. HTC...
