VARANASI, April 23 -- Attacking the Centre over the women's quota row, Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai on Wednesday alleged that linking women's reservation to the delimitation exercise was a calculated manoeuvre. "Why they (the Centre) wanted to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850 and what was the need to make the census and delimitation prerequisites for implementing the women's reservation," he asked during a press conference here. "This is a clear indication that the government does not wish to give women their rights immediately," Rai alleged. He said the Women's Reservation Bill 2023, officially named the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, was passed by Parliament in September 2023. "It also received the President's assent. Yet, it has not been implemented till date," Rai said. "If this was indeed a historic piece of legislation, why has it not been implemented? Was this a genuine desire to empower women or merely political management," he asked. The Congress leader alleged that while women were promised their rights, they received nothing but delay and confusion.
