'FD scam': Bank Mitra, aide held
LUCKNOW, Jan. 20 -- Para police in the city on Monday arrested Shiva Rao, a 'bank mitra' (banking correspondent) and his aide Deepak Kumar for allegedly embezzling lakhs of rupees by issuing forged fixed deposit (FD) receipts to customers at a bank branch operating inside a state university campus on Mohaan Road.
"Police recovered Rs.2.38 lakh from the accused, along with two mobile phones and a bunch of keys belonging to the bank branch," read a Lucknow police press note.
The scam surfaced on January 12 when several customers confronted Rao over discrepancies in their accounts.
A joint complaint by 24 victims, including 17 women, led to the registration of an FIR.
Police believe over 50 customers may have been defrauded.
Officials said the total amount involved in the fraud could run into crores as more victims are expected to come forward. Rao, who had been working at the branch since 2015, exploited the trust he had built over nearly a decade, police said. Htc...
