'Cong to launch 'Save MNREGA Campaign'
PRAYAGRAJ, Jan. 13 -- Prayagraj MP Ujjwal Raman Singh said during a press conference on Monday that the Congress-led UPA government had implemented the historic MNREGA Act for rural India on February 2, 2006, which provided large-scale employment in villages. At that time, the Central government's share in the scheme was 90 percent and the state governments' share was only 10 percent, but the current BJP government has changed this to a 40:60 ratio, placing a 40 percent burden on the states. This makes it seem impossible to effectively run MNREGA. He said that the BJP government had claimed that villagers would get 125 days of employment, while the reality is that during the current government's tenure, on average, only 53 to 60 percent of employment is being provided to the people.
He said that the Congress would launch a movement under the 'Save MNREGA Campaign' to ensure the scheme is implemented effectively again.
