Kashmir's silk carpet weaving gets boost with skill training
Srinagar, Jan. 30 -- : To revive centuries-old craft of hand-knotted silk carpet weaving in Kashmir, Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT), Srinagar of Handicrafts and Handloom department will train 160 candidates under the SAMARTH.
The Scheme for Capacity Building in Textile Sector is an initiative of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.
In a statement Director, IICT, Srinagar, Zubair Ahmad, said that SAMARTH is a part of broader efforts to revitalise the carpet sector in Kashmir by enhancing skill levels, promoting design innovation, improving infrastructure, and reconnecting artisans with global markets, thereby preserving a cherished craft while boosting employment and export potential.
In the first phase, IICT has successfully registered 160 candidates and formed eight training batches of 20 trainees each across Srinagar, Ganderbal, Bandipora, Pulwama, Kulgam, Anantnag, Budgam and Baramulla districts. htc...
