Incumbent parties retain 4 of 8 assembly bypoll constituencies
New Delhi, Nov. 15 -- Results of eight assembly by-elections across six states and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir were announced on Friday, with half of these seats voting to the incumbent ruling parties, except in Budgam and Nagrota in J&K and Anta in Rajasthan.
The bypolls were held in Budgam and Nagrota (Jammu and Kashmir), Anta (Rajasthan), Ghatshila (Jharkhand), Jubilee Hills (Telangana), Tarn Taran (Punjab), Dampa (Mizoram), and Nuapada (Odisha) on November 11.
Congress candidate V Naveen Yadav won the by-election to Jubilee Hills Assembly constituency in Hyderabad with 98,988 votes, defeating his nearest BRS rival Maganti Sunitha by a margin of over 24,000 votes.
BJP candidate Lankala Deepak Reddy, who managed to get only 17,061 votes, forfeited his security deposit.
The bypoll was necessitated after BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath's death in June this year.
Congress candidate Pramod Jain Bhaya won the Anta assembly bypoll in Rajasthan's Baran district with 69,571 votes, defeating his nearest rival and BJP nominee Morpal Suman by a margin of 15,612 votes, according to the Election Commission.
The margin of votes between Morpal Suman and independent Naresh Meena was only 159.
The bypoll was necessitated after BJP MLA Kanwar Lal Meena was disqualified after his conviction in a criminal case.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Aga Syed Muntazir won with 21,576 votes, defeating the ruling National Conference candidate Aga Syed Mehmood by a margin of 4,478 votes in the bypoll to Budgam assembly segment in Jammu and Kashmir.
The BJP's Aga Syed Mohsin stood sixth with 2,619 votes.
This is the first time that the NC has lost in its bastion of Budgam, in central Kashmir, since 1957, the first elections for the legislative assembly.
The Budgam bypoll was necessitated after chief minister Omar Abdullah vacated the seat and chose his family bastion of Ganderbal after winning from both constituencies in the assembly elections last year.
BJP retained the Nagrota assembly constituency in Jammu and Kashmir as 30-year-old Devyani Rana won with 42,350 votes and a lead of 24,647 votes over Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) candidate Harsh Dev Singh, who got 17,703 votes.
National Conference's Shamim Begum finished third with 10,872 votes.
Devyani Rana is the daughter of former Nagrota MLA Devender Singh Rana, whose death last year necessitated the bypoll. He was elected from the constituency in the 2024 assembly polls.
BJP candidate Jay Dholakia won by a margin of 83,748 votes in the Nuapada assembly bypoll in Odisha, according to the Election Commission.
Dholakia secured 123,869 votes, while his nearest rival, Ghasiram Majhi of the Congress, managed to secure 40,121 votes.
Snehangini Chhuria of the BJD stood on the third spot with 38,408 votes.
Jay Dholakia is the son of the late BJD MLA Rajendra Dholakia, whose death on September 8 necessitated the bypoll.
The ruling AAP retained the Tarn Taran assembly seat in Punjab on Friday, with its candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu defeating his nearest rival and SAD nominee Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa by a margin of 12,091 votes.
Harmeet Singh Sandhu secured 42,649 votes against Randhawa's 30,558 after the completion of all 16 rounds of counting, the Election Commission website showed.
The Tarn Taran seat fell vacant after the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June.
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidate Somesh Chandra Soren polled 104,936 votes and won by a margin of 38,601 votes over Babulal Soren of the BJP in the by-election to the Ghatsila assembly seat in Jharkhand's East Singhbhum district, according to the Election Commission.
Somesh Chandra Soren is the son of JMM MLA Ramdas Soren, whose death on August 15 necessitated the bypoll.
Mizoram's main opposition party, Mizo National Front (MNF) retained the Dampa assembly seat in Mamit district, with its candidate R Lalthangliana defeating his nearest rival, Vanlalsailova of the ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), by a margin of 562 votes, according to the Election Commission.
Lalthangliana secured 6,981 votes, which is 40.23% of the total vote share.
With 6,419 votes, Vanlalsailova bagged 36.61% of the total polled votes.
