8 held for 'vandalism' during protest against sexual harassment
Srinagar, April 15 -- Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday arrested eight persons allegedly involved in vandalism during protests against alleged sexual harassment of a girl student by a government lecturer in Sopore, officials said on Tuesday.
Another 25 persons have been identified for their alleged involvement, the police added.
Protests broke out in Sopore on Monday after a girl levelled sexual harassment allegations against a lecturer. The accused was then booked under relevant sections and suspended after government orders. During the demonstrations, some people reportedly vandalised several vehicles and school property.
"Police arrested eight miscreants involved in vandalism during a student protest; 25 more identified. Strict action underway against those disturbing public order," Sopore Police said in a statement.
Meanwhile, all colleges and higher secondary schools in Sopore town have been closed till Saturday. The director of education suspended the lecturer and attached him to Gurez until the inquiry concludes within the next 15 days.
