Two Punjab smugglers held in border distt with drugs, arms
BIKANER, May 6 -- Police arrested two alleged Punjab drugs and arms smugglers near the India-Pakistan border in Rajasthan's Sriganganagar district and recovered heroin, opium and a cache of weapons from their vehicle, officers said.
Station house officer Krishn Kumar said: "Semejakoti police station is a sensitive border outpost where smuggling of narcotics-particularly heroin dropped via drones from across the Pakistan border-has been a persistent concern. To counter this, a special intelligence team comprising constables Kaluram and Surajbhan had been deployed to track such activities."
After sustained efforts, the team gathered credible inputs. On May 4, police received specific information that two smugglers from Punjab had entered the Semejakoti area in a car to collect a heroin consignment. SHO Krishn Kumar promptly formed multiple teams and ordered barricades across key routes.
A major blockade sealed National Highway 911 (Sriganganagar-Khajuwala, Bikaner) using tractor-trolleys and heavy barriers to block escapes. Teams positioned strategically in villages including Salempura and Semejakoti formed a multi-layered cordon.
A luxury vehicle speeding from the Anupgarh side-already under pursuit-approached the blockade. The driver rammed a tractor-trolley in an attempt to break through but halted after impact.
Earlier, near Salempura, the same car had struck a private Bolero while evading checks and fled towards Semejakoti, triggering the chase.
The occupants tried to flee on foot but were swiftly apprehended.
The accused are Balwinder Singh (27) and Robin Singh (23), both from Mahatma Nagar under Sadar Fazilka police station in Punjab.
A vehicle search yielded 1.494 kg of heroin and 985 grams of opium, plus five pistols, 10 magazines and 72 live cartridges. Officials suspect the drugs and arms came from Pakistan, possibly by drone.
Police impounded the car and are investigating links to Pakistan handlers and Punjab associates.
"Both accused are currently being interrogated at Semejakoti police station, and further investigation is underway to trace the broader network involved in the smuggling operation," SHO Krishn Kumar said....
