sms jaipur: 5-kg spleen removed from gaucher's disease patient
Jaipur, April 24 -- Doctors at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital removed a massive 5-kg spleen from a 19-year-old patient suffering from Gaucher Disease, marking the first such surgery at the hospital for the genetic disorder.
The patient had been experiencing progressive abdominal swelling, fatigue and early satiety - symptoms that prompted detailed evaluation. According to chief surgeon Dr RG Khandelwal, investigations revealed massive splenomegaly, with the spleen enlarged several times beyond its normal size.
Further blood tests showed anaemia and low platelet count. Advanced diagnostics confirmed Gaucher Disease, a rare inherited condition caused by deficiency of the enzyme glucocerebrosidase, leading to abnormal accumulation of fatty substances in organs such as the spleen and liver.
The complex procedure was carried out under the guidance of Dr Rajendra Mandia by a multidisciplinary team.
Hospital authorities said this is the first reported case at SMS Hospital where surgery was required for massive splenomegaly caused by Gaucher Disease....
