Row after advocate held for rape of BJP leader in Udaipur
Jaipur, Feb. 20 -- A political row erupted on Thursday after the opposition Congress alleged police atrocities against the family members of an advocate, who was arrested last week in Udaipur after a local BJP leader accused him of raping and blackmailing her.
While the family members of the accused, advocate Vikram Gurjar, alleged that police vandalised their house when they came to arrest him on February 12, a day after a woman leader of BJP's local unit in Udaipur lodged a complaint against him.
Following his arrest, the Congress held a protest march to the collectorate and submitted a memorandum to Governor Haribhau Bagde demanding a CBI probe into the matter.
Congress district president Fateh Singh Rathore said: "If he had done anything wrong, he should be punished. But the BJP leader lodged the complaint at around 11pm and the police in civil dress along with some BJP leaders immediately reached his house around 2 am, vandalised his house, assaulted the women, and also arrested him."
The police team also seized some documents and electronic devices, he alleged. "Neither they launched a primary probe nor clarified on the development of the investigation as of now. This raises several questions. His family also said that he is innocent. Why did the police act so quickly? Did they speak to him or his family members? Who pressured them to take him in custody so hurriedly?"
Speaking to reporters, leader of opposition, Tika Ram Jully, on Thursday said, "Have you got 'Udaipur Files'? We are going to present it soon, which will expose several BJP leaders."
The controversy began on February 11 when the woman filed a police complaint against Gurjar.
Investigating officer Gopal Chandel said the woman in her complaint alleged that she had been working at the advocate's office as a junior for the last one year. She alleged that in November last year, the advocate raped her after serving her cold drinks spiked with "some alcoholic substance" and took some obscene photos of the woman.
"...the accused showed her some obscene photos of her and started blackmailing that he would upload them on the internet if she reports the matter," Chandel said, citing the FIR.
The advocate has been booked for rape and blackmailing under BNS as well as under IT Act for taking obscene photos. On February 12, police conducted a raid at Gurjar's residence and arrested him. "We also seized some pen drives, documents, and electronic devices from where those photos were found...," Chandel said.
Gurjar's sister, Mamta Gurjar, said, "Everything happened under the influence of that woman leader. My brother is innocent. Police vandalised our house, misbehaved with my family members, and also assaulted the women. There was no female constable when they went to my house."...
