Raj plans preservation of tribal heritage drive
Jaipur, Feb. 25 -- The Rajasthan government will launch large-scale documentation and preservation of tribal heritage under the Saundh Maati and Heritage Documentation Scheme, tribal area development minister Babulal Kharadi said on Monday.
Highlighting the initiative, Kharadi said traditional musical instruments of tribal artists, indigenous culinary practices, faith centres, historical sites, paintings, wood and stone crafts, folk dances and singing traditions will be systematically documented and conserved to safeguard the rich cultural legacy of tribal communities.
He said the move forms part of broader efforts to honour the sacrifices, culture and heritage of tribal societies, especially ahead of the 150th birth anniversary of legendary freedom fighter Birsa Munda. To commemorate the occasion, Janjati Gaurav Diwas is observed every year on November 15. The period from November 15, 2024, to November 15, 2025, was celebrated as Janjati Gaurav Year, during which competitions and events related to tribal arts, traditions and culture-including speeches, essay writing and devotional music-were organised across the state.
Kharadi said the heritage documentation scheme aims not only to preserve traditional knowledge systems but also to provide recognition and identity to tribal art forms at state and national levels.
As part of efforts to promote tribal culture, a National Tribal Food Festival was organised in Udaipur from September 15 to 17 last year, where tribal cuisine and traditional food practices were showcased. The festival offered residents and tourists an opportunity to learn about indigenous food traditions and taste authentic tribal dishes.
The minister added that alongside cultural preservation, the government is addressing health and education challenges in tribal-dominated areas. Toll-free numbers have been issued to ensure better treatment for anaemia patients in tribal regions; on calling the helpline, an ambulance will pick up patients and ensure they receive proper medical care at hospitals.
To promote educational advancement, free coaching is being provided to tribal girls studying in Class 11....
