NGT panel report flags sewage flow into pond
JODHPUR, Feb. 6 -- A joint committee constituted on the orders of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has revealed that sewage is entering the pond of the Shri Kalyan Rai Ji Temple in Jhalrapatan town of Jhalawar and has recommended the installation of pipelines and reflux valves to address the issue.
The NGT, while hearing a petition filed by the Shri Kalyan Rai Ji Temple Committee on September 25 last year, had ordered the formation of a joint committee. The committee submitted its report to the NGT on Monday. According to the report, "Outside the temple's premises, near its entrance on the opposite side of the road, there is an open municipal drain carrying the city's domestic sewage for treatment/disposal... sometimes during the rainy season, there is accumulation of rainwater in this drain, as it is an open drain, leading to a sudden increase in the water level of the drain and creating a pressure difference due to which the water from this drain flows in reverse or backward direction into the sacred pond, resulting in mixing of domestic sewage water with pond water and leading to deterioration of the water quality of the pond."
