Heavy turnout marks bar council polls; voting deferred in 4 booths
JODHPUR, April 23 -- Heavy turnout marked voting for the Bar Council of Rajasthan elections across the state on Wednesday, but polling was deferred at four booths due to disputes and logistical snags, officials said.
Polling began at 8am for the election of 23 members to the Bar Council, with more than 84,000 advocates eligible to vote at 258 polling stations across Rajasthan.
However, voting could not be completed at four locations: two booths in Jaipur (at the High Court and Sessions Court premises), one at the Heritage court complex in Jodhpur, and one at Raisinghnagar in Sri Ganganagar district.
Chief election officer and senior advocate Dr Sachin Acharya said fresh polling would be held at these booths within a week. "In view of the situation at some centres and after discussions with candidates, the committee decided to defer polling at four booths. Re-polling will be held within a week," he said.
At Jodhpur's Heritage court complex, large crowds of advocates gathered from morning, forming long queues well before polling started. The situation grew unmanageable later amid intense heat and complaints of long waits. After discussions between election officials and candidates, polling there was deferred, with a new date to be announced separately.
Advocates at the venue blamed the unusually large ballot paper, listing 234 candidates, for the delays. Several said it took 15-20 minutes inside the booth to locate preferences and mark votes, slowing queues.
This year's election drew strong participation, with 234 candidates-including 57 women-in the fray. Of the 23 seats, five are reserved for women advocates.
Jodhpur ranks as the state's second-largest voting centre after Jaipur, with 8,974 registered advocates. Across Rajasthan, 84,293 advocates are eligible to vote under Supreme Court supervision.
Election officials said the rest of the polling proceeded amid heavy turnout and enthusiasm, with further decisions on the deferred booths to follow soon....
