HC seeks action plan on toxic water discharge into Luni River
JODHPUR, Jan. 17 -- The Rajasthan high court has expressed serious concern over toxic chemical wastewater being discharged into the Luni River and surrounding areas of western Rajasthan by industrial units, and directed the state government to file a status report and action plan before the next hearing.
A division bench of justices Vinit Kumar Mathur and Chandra Shekhar Sharma, while hearing a PIL filed by Sanwalram, on Thursday noted: "The discharge of poisonous and hazardous effluents in the river and the nearby fields has created havoc in the vicinity of districts Jodhpur, Balotra and Pali."
"Despite several orders having been passed by this Court, the net result is that the State functionaries remain callous and unconcerned with the havoc being created by the discharge of poisonous and hazardous pollutants in river Luni and its distributaries," the bench said.
Additional advocate general SS Rathore assured that appropriate action shall be taken against the erring industrial units. He submitted that the status report and action plan to curb the menace shall be produced before this Court on the next date of hearing on March 5....
