hc judge recuses from hearing state's plea in blackbuck case
Jodhpur, Feb. 17 -- Justice Baljinder Singh Sandhu of the Rajasthan High Court on Monday recused himself from hearing the Rajasthan government's plea seeking leave to appeal against the acquittal of Bollywood actors Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre, Neelam, and local resident Dushyant Singh in the 1998 blackbuck poaching case.
The single bench directed that the matter be placed before another bench. During the previous hearing, a coordinate bench had ordered that the criminal appeal filed by accused Salman Khan before the sessions court be listed along with the state government's plea after its registration. Salman Khan is accused of hunting two blackbucks on the night of October 1 and 2, 1998, near Kankani village in Jodhpur district during the shooting of the film Hum Saath Saath Hain. The other accused were charged with allegedly abetting the offence. On April 5, 2018, a Jodhpur Chief Judicial Magistrate court sentenced Salman Khan to five years in jail, while the co-accused were acquitted after being given the benefit of doubt. Salman Khan later filed an appeal against his conviction, while the state government sought leave to appeal against the acquittal of the co-accused. Both matters will now be heard together....
