Jaipur/Bikaner, Feb. 23 -- A 13-year-old girl who had left for school to appear in an exam was found dead in a suspicious condition in Bikaner district, police said on Sunday. Bikaner SP, Kavendra Singh Sagar, said, "She is a Class VIII student at a government school in Ranjeetpur which is about four kilometres away from her home. The incident took place at around 11.30am on Saturday when she was going to appear for her exam." However, at around 12.30pm, the school authority called her parents and informed that she didn't arrive in the school. "Her parents and some locals immediately started searching for her and recovered her body from a forest area close to a highway. This is only about a kilometre from the school," said the SP. The body was found half-naked and there was also some injury marks on her body following which the locals staged a dharna on the highway, alleging that the minor was raped, police said. "The protesters demanded immediate action against the culprit and a Rs.1 crore compensation to the family members. The administration could not come to an agreement last night, " said SP Sagar. However, they agreed to shift the body to the mortuary in Sunday morning while the dharna was continued, he said. Sagar said that the body was sent for an autopsy while a case was registered against unidentified people under Section 103 (murder) of the BNS and necessary sections of Pocso act. The incident also sparked a political slugfest as the opposition Congress leaders cornered the government over deteriorating law and order situation in the state. Leader of Opposition, Tikaram Jully, said, This incident has exposed the reality of the pathetic condition of the law and order in the state. The situation is so worse that the women are scared to go out. I urge the CM Bhajan Lal Sharma to launch a thorough probe into the matter and arrest the perpetrators." Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday strongly condemned the incident, calling the it "shameful" and a "deep blot" on the state. Targeting CM Bhajan Lal Sharma, he urged him to move beyond "mere announcements and photo-ops" and take concrete steps to restore law and order.
