Barmer, Jan. 8 -- A Class 12 girl's family in Barmer district has filed a complaint alleging social boycott by the panchayat for refusing a marriage proposal, which allegedly disrupted the girl's studies. The incident was reported from Khawda village under the Gudamalani police station area, where the victim's family has accused local community elders of imposing social sanctions after they declined to accept a marriage alliance linked to an old family relationship. According to the family, when they opposed the proposal and insisted on allowing the girl to complete her education, the panchayat allegedly declared a social boycott and demanded a penalty of Rs.30 lakh. The family also alleged that essential facilities such as access to water and groceries were stopped and the household was subjected to constant threats. The victim has named 19 people in her complaint, accusing them of enforcing the boycott and issuing threats, including warnings of dire consequences if she stepped outside her home. As a result, the girl reportedly stopped attending classes regularly and remained confined indoors out of fear. "I was studying and preparing for my future, but the mental pressure has disrupted everything," the victim said. No one in the community is allowed to keep any contact with us, the victim alleged. "The file has been received, and action will be taken based on evidence and witness statements," said Barmer superintendent of police Nitesh Arya....
