JODHPUR, Jan. 11 -- The Rajasthan high court on Friday, taking serious note of the death of an undertrial prisoner lodged at Jodhpur Central Jail in July 2025 , directed that the pending judicial inquiry into the matter be completed within 15 days. The court also took cognizance of the allegations levelled by the prisoner's family, including allegations of extortion by prison officials. The prisoner, identified as Ruparam, was admitted to a government hospital in a seriously injured state and subsequently succumbed to his injuries. The bench of Justice Farjand Ali directed that the report be sent to the high court without delay. The bench also directed the jail superintendent to file a detailed affidavit explaining how the prisoner sustained the injuries mentioned in his post-mortem examination report while in custody. The jailer and the concerned superintendent of police were ordered to file affidavits. "This Court cannot remain oblivious to the fact that complaints of corruption within jails are not uncommon. It is a matter of judicial notice that illegal collections from inmates often result in the easy availability of prohibited articles such as drugs, mobile phones, and at times even arms inside jail premises," said the bench, while marking the next hearing as January 23....
